Perhaps the most difficult part of this process is knowing when it is time. In home euthanasia is a peaceful option if your dog or cat has been given a terminal diagnosis.  It helps to acknowledge that doing this is the most compassionate thing you can do for the animal you have loved so much. Once your companion has reached a point medically where they are in pain that can’t be managed or have a condition they cannot recover from, choosing to let them go peacefully, surrounded by love and in their home is a kindness.

When deciding if it is the right time, it is helpful to consider these questions:

1. Is your pet in pain?If so, can it be lessened or controlled with medication?
2. Can your pet walk without assistance?
3. Can your pet relieve himself/herself on their own?
4. What are your pet’s eating characteristics, do they have an appetite?
5. Has your pet been diagnosed with a terminal condition?
6. Are you able to provide for the needed level of care for your pet?
7. What is your veterinarian’s opinion about your pet’s quality of life?

The Quality of Life Guide is meant to help you determine whether you should consider hospice care or euthanasia.

The result should only be one of the factors in making a final decision for home pet euthanasia. 

It should be not the only factor.
