In April 2008 I brought my dog Peanut to a crematorium that looked beautiful online, situated on a farm in rural Nevada. Peanut was the most important thing in my entire world. When I arrived, it was a farm, but there was no place to say goodbye to my baby girl, and they didn't even invite me onto the property. I handed her over the gate to a stranger. I was overcome with deep sadness for months, not only because Peanut had passed away, but because she was the first dog that I ever had to make the decision to put to sleep. Handing her to that stranger was one of the hardest things I ever had to do.

Just five months later, I brought my cat Jefferey to the same crematorium because I wanted his spirit to be with Peanut's. I asked them to please make sure they get a front paw ink print since Jefferey had extra thumbs. When I went back for Jefferey's remains days later, I found that not only was the ink print not Jefferey's front paw, but I don't think it was his paw at all! To this day I wonder in horrific sadness if I was given Jefferey's and Peanut's actual remains. It will haunt me forever.

One of the most special and unique things we offer pet families at Cholla Afterlife is a Sprinkling, a ceremony we created based on traditions from many cultures. Every client who brings their pet to Cholla or requests that we pick up their pet from their home or vet office, is offered to participate in a Sprinkling in which we provide dried herbs and flowers to the family. Family members hold this special blend in their hands for a moment, pouring all their love into it. They then sprinkle the blend onto their pet, and rub it into the parts of the pet that may have been painful to them during life. Those flowers and herbs and the love they carry travel with the pet through their entire journey, ensuring them a safe trip to the Bridge. They are ultimately mixed into their pet's powdered remains and placed in an urn. As a result, a little bit of the family stays with their pet forever.
